Louise Boruque’s work explores the range of American beliefs about sex(-uality) with editorial aesthetics and perverse wit. They make wry commentary and connections about “American values” and the portrayals of gender & sexuality in past and present media—all the while dissecting their own identity and experience as a queer American.

Louise Boruque is a photographer based in Chicago whose practice often utilizes personal artifacts, their own body, and body fluids in their work to investigate sex(-uality), values, and gender. Born the youngest of six children and brought up in the Catholic Church of a quaint city in Illinois, their upbringing directly informs their approach to these portrayals of sexuality and gender. Their photography practice began in their high school darkroom learning analog cameras, natural lighting and printing before digital photography.

Early career experience as an e-commerce photographer brought studio lighting into their repertoire resulting in the approach to their condom series. Their still life and self portraiture practices submit to natural or environmental lighting for candid and intuitive self-expression.

Boruque graduated from Columbia College Chicago in 2020 with a BA in marketing while assisting various artists in Chicago and working as a commercial model. In 2019, they studied at L’ESÄ in Tourcoing, France where fine art took a humanities forward approach and emphasized the questioning of classifications and categories. L’ESÄ set Boruque up to approach their marketing career as a means of informing thematic choices in their art practice. In addition to their art practice, Boruque currently works in social media marketing for a direct-to-consumer beauty brand.
